BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Sushanta Mahapatra completed his Masters and M. Phil. degree in Economics from Sambalpur University, Orissa and his Ph. D. degree in Economics from a premier Indian Council of Social Science Research Institute, Madras Institute of Development Studies through the University of Madras, Chennai. Prior to joining ASB, he has worked as a NABARD-BIRD (Bankers Institute of Rural Development) Senior Researcher at Centre for Micro Finance and subsequently at Centre for Insurance and Risk Management at Institute for Financial Management and Research, Chennai. He has collaborated in research projects supported by organizations like ILO Geneva, CARE Foundation, Harvard School of Public Health, RSBY, Sir Ratan Tata Trust, Ministry of Rural Development Govt of India, SBI and NABARD.

He has worked as a Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA) Consultant on ‘Towards Improving Participatory Irrigation Management and Performance of Water Users Association under JICA-Assisted Irrigation Projects in India-Understanding the Institutional Dynamics, Performance and Benefits’ through Institute for Social and Economic Change, Bangalore, India. He has also previously worked as a Senior Scientist within a multi-disciplinary team at JRD Tata Ecotechnology Centre, M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation Chennai and was involved with a mega project entitled Community Managed Bio-Industrial Watersheds for Sustainable Use of Natural Resources and Enhanced Livelihoods.

Presently at ASB, he teaches in Master and Doctoral Programme in the area of Economics and Environment, and coordinates the working paper series. He has published his research ideas in national and international peer reviewed journals, edited volumes and working papers. Besides, he has presented several papers in International and National level seminars/workshops/conferences. He is the recipient of prestigious Malcolm Elizabeth Adiseshiah Doctoral Merit Fellowship from Madras Institute of Development Studies, Chennai.

He has received the prestigious European Commission Post-Doctoral Scholarship through Erasmus Mundus India4EU II Programme.
