14-day Management Development Program for New Managers of Employee State Insurance Corp (ESIC) of India

Sunday 14th June 2009 to Sunday 28th June 2009

Amrita School of Business, Ettimadai conducted a 14 day MDP for new managers of Employees State Insurance Corporation from Sunday 14th June 2009 to 28th June 2009. It was attended by 51 participants and the average age of the participants were about 30 years. The program was inaugurated by Prof. N.S.Pandian, Chairperson for PG programs, Amrita University, Coimbatore. The program had a rigorous academic content covering all areas of management. Classes on Yoga and Meditation and also swimming were very much part of the program. At the end of the program all the participants were evaluated on a 50 point scale on their knowledge and skills acquisition and participation. The valedictory function was held on Saturday 27th June 2009 and was presided by Dr. Krishnamurthy, Registrar of the University and Prof. Gangadharan, Chairperson, IT Department, ASE.

On Sunday 21st June 2009, all the participants along with some of our faculty members and staff were taken for a one-day outing to Ooty. Participants' feedback at the end of the program was excellent and all the participants found the program quite enriching, both with the academic program and the beautiful environment.

4-day Management Development Program for Senior Officers of Employee State Insurance Corp (ESIC) of India

Tuesday 27th to Friday 30th Jan. 2009

The Employee State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) of India is a statutory corporation that provides social security coverage to over one crore industrial workers and family members. It operates over a hundred hospitals and nearly one thousand dispensaries in different parts of the country. Senior medical as well as non-medical officers of ESIC were at our Coimbatore Campus this past week to participate in a 4-day Management Development Program organized by the Amrita School of Business.

"As a whole, the program was an event to remember and needs repetition," said a participant, Mr. Y. S. Rathee, ESIC Joint Director based in Delhi. "What impressed me most about the program were the sessions on yoga, meditation and self actualization. Transaction analysis and marketing by Prof. Kulkarni was also very useful and path-breaking," he added. Dr. S. R. Chauhan from Kollam stated, "For me, the highlights were the unique ambience and completely changed lifestyle from morning till night."

This was the third Management Development Program Amrita had conducted for senior executives of ESIC. Participants had traveled from places such as Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Chennai, Jaipur, Pondicherry, Salem, Uttarakhand and West Bengal to attend. As in the previous programs, every day began at 6:30 am with an hour of yoga and meditation. These sessions were led by Prof Udaya Kumar who has taught the mandatory classes of Self Awareness and Personal Growth to MBA students at Amrita for nearly a decade.

In-depth sessions on organizational behavior, managing customer relationship, customer service satisfaction, corporate communication, B 2 B marketing and visionary leadership were also conducted. (see MDP timetable) The sessions were led by the faculty of the Business School, many of them doctorates from leading universities in India and abroad. "Delivery of lectures was unique, impressive and engrossing," wrote Dr. Madhurika Aggarwal, Chief Medical Officer from Delhi in her feedback survey.

Time was also set aside daily for nature walks in the picturesque campus as well as for swimming in the Olympic size swimming pool.

5-day Management Development Program on General Management for the Joint Directors of Employees' State Insurance Corporation

Monday 10th to Friday 14th Nov. 2008

About 20 Joint Directors of the Employees' State Insurance Corporation from different parts of the country actively participated in an in-house Management Development Program on General Management organized and conducted by Amrita School of Business between the 10th and 14th of November 2008.

The various subjects that were taught included 1) General Management and Development, 2) Introduction to Marketing, 3) Introduction to Quality Management, 4) Theories of Motivation, 5) Organizational Behaviour and Culture, 6) Conflict Resolution, 7) Interpersonal Skills and Workplace Motivation, 8) Customer Satisfaction and Relationship Management, 9) Visionary Leadership, 10) Transactional Analysis, 11) Introduction to Finance, 12) Team Building, 13) Theory and Practice of Yoga, 14) Understanding Self through Self Awareness, 15) Meditation, 16) B2B Marketing, 17) Understanding and Management of Stress, 17) Services Marketing etc. Nature walk, trekking and swimming was also part of the training sessions.

On the whole, the participants' feedback at the end of the program was excellent. All of them not only wholeheartedly participated in the program but also enjoyed every aspect of the entire five day program, though some of them felt that it was pretty rigorous. All the participants were above the age of 45 and many of them had a minimum of 10 years and a maximum of 25 years work experience and above in senior levels of management in the organization.

ASB has conducted a Management Development Programme for Senior Management Executives of ELGI Equipments, Coimbatore. The MDP was a customised learning programme which ran for over a year - with classes being held at ASB on weekends. Comprising a Basic and Advanced Course, the MDP was designed like a Customised Executive MBA programme covering all key functional areas of Management like Finance, General Management, HRM, Marketing, Operations and Systems."

MDP for District Industries Centre (DIC), Government of Kerala
A 15-day In-campus residential programme on "General Management" was conducted for 30 officers of the Kerala Government, working in Proficiency Interface Cell of DIC from every district of Kerala. The MDP consisted of 10 modules with focus on Entrepreneurial Management and the SSI Sector. The basic thrust of the programme was to create a better understanding of managerial and entrepreneurial aspects of guiding, monitoring and facilitating the development of small scale industry in Kerala. The programme was conducted in July 2004 and the MDP was handled by ASB Faculty. The Facilitators from Kerala Government were KITCO and KIED. The MDP which was attended by Kerala Government Officers up to the level of Joint Director/General Manager was reviewed by Mr. P.H. Kurian, IAS, Secretary, Government of Kerala. The Valedictory Programme had Senior Officers from the Ministry and KITCO, who participated in the Group Presentations done by the delegates.

MDP for Thirumalai Chemicals Ltd
In early 2004, a 10-day MDP on "Intensive Leadership Skills" was designed and executed for managers of Thirumalai Chemicals. This was followed by another 10-day MDP for Thirumalai on "General Management".

MDP for ACC and Malabar Cements
A customized programme on "Elements of Costing" was conducted for ACC Ltd.,
A 2-day MDP on "Behavioural Sciences in Management" was done for Malabar Cements Ltd.

Logistics as a Competitive Opportunity: The 2-day MDP was attended by delegates from various companies in India such as HP, BPL Mobile, Carrying Corporation of India, Cochin Shipyard, DHL, Lemuir, DTDC, Roots India, UMS and Lee Muirhead. The industry domain expert was Mr. K.B. Nagaraju, Country Manager, Hewlett-Packard.

Customer Satisfaction Management: This 2-day residential MDP was attended by managers from reputed companies like TCS, HP, SFL, ESAB, Kancor, Malayala Manorama, Idea Cellular, KITCO, AIMS, and Popular. The industry domain expert was Mr. R. Ravi, General Manager, Network Development, Maruti Udyog Limited.

Turnaround Strategy: A 1-day MDP was conducted on Turnaround Strategy. Mr. Jay Misra (Ex-MD, George Soros Capital Investment, USA) who did his MBA from Harvard was the external domain expert.
