The Department of Cardiology at the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS) formed a support group for Automatic Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (AICD) recipients on January 25, 2014.
The program was inaugurated by Member of Parliament, P. Rajeev. The meeting was presided over by Dr. Prem Nair, Medical Director. A number of AICD recipients shared their personal experiences with the audience. Scientific sessions by Dr. Praveen G. Pai; Sheeja K. A., Physician Assistant; Vishnu Mani, Medical Social Worker; and a skit by the AIMS Cath Lab team followed. About 100 AICD recipients along with family members attended the program.
Automatic Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (AICD) is an equipment which treats complex heart rhythm problems among post heart attack (Myocardial Infarction) patients and cardiac arrest survivors.
AICD support group at AIMS offers such patients a forum to discuss their problems among themselves, physicians and social workers. AIMS have performed about 250 AICD implants since 1998. AIMS offers specialized follow up and 24 hours emergency helpline services of these patients. With the recent availability of 3D mapping facilities it forms an integral part of patient management.
AICD recipients have medical, psychological and emotional issues throughout their lives. The support group ensures a forum to discuss their problems among themselves, physicians and social workers thereby creating an opportunity for improving morale and well being of these otherwise dependent patients.
Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS) is part of the Health Sciences campus of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham (Amrita University). The hospital has received the ISO 9001-2008 accreditation and also enjoys accreditation from the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) for its laboratories and the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH) for the hospital overall.
